“Recruiting world class doctors across Australia”

By Dr Anna

WHAT IS THE TEAM LIKE?

Amazing. Everybody is so friendly, easy to get along with, and has a very casual and supportive working environment.

No bed block, no push back admitting patients to the ward, plenty of support from inpatient teams 24/7 when you need it in ED. We all socialise together and have a laugh at work.

The hospitality shown to me by the clinical and administrative staff was incredible. The rostering was fair and the workplace was very collegial.

The ED work is really interesting and there is plenty of support from inpatient teams.

I came for a locum in 2013 and have been here for 8 years.

TELL US ABOUT THE SETUP OF THE HOSPITAL AND SUPPORT FOR A LOCUM DOCTOR AT HEDLAND HEALTH CAMPUS?

Regional referral centre for the Pilbara. Young town, very little geriatric medicine.

A significant proportion of Indigenous medicine, we provide medical care to the mining industry and to the local community (mainly young families, quite a lot of interesting paediatric presentations).

Very little trauma. Some psych, drug and alcohol.

No inpatient psych unit, have a PLN in ED and community psychiatrist to assess patients.

24/7 consultant Surgeon, Physician, FANZCA anaesthetist, Anaesthetics DMO, consultant Paediatrician & Obstetrician. Sub-speciality DMO support (anaesthetics, O&G).

Med reg and senior Paeds reg + junior doctors for all teams. Public Health Physician onsite. Radiology has x-ray, CT and ultrasound. Istat in ED + full path lab/blood bank.

Outpatient access to most sub-specialties. For a rural site, it is a very well supported service.

Very fair roster, competitive rates, interesting medicine, workload manageable, awesome team to work with.

Totally recommend HHC as a locum.

WHAT DOES THE TRAVEL AND ACCOMMODATION LOOK LIKE FOR A LOCUM DOCTOR IN PORT HEDLAND?

The accommodation is not the greatest but the friendly team and workplace atmosphere more than compensate for the lack of luxury.

Accommodation is basic but the air-conditioning works and the shower water pressure is good.

You can get a nice view of the ocean in some apartments. It is not luxury and I have had much better, but the perks of working at Hedland more than compensate for the average accommodation.

Hedland is a long way from anywhere unless coming from Perth, it’s two flights and often you need to put a day aside to travel.

Hot tips – come the day before your shift, it’s a long way to get here. Winter is amazing.

ANY LOCAL’S INSIDE INFORMATION TO SHARE? BEST SWIMMING SPOTS? LOOKOUTS? BIKE OR WALK TRAILS?

Two swimming pools in town and multiple gyms if that’s your thing (have never been to the gym in 8 years but people rate it).

TOWN AMENITIES? SHOPS, COFFEE TIPS FOR A LOCUM DOCTOR IN PORT HEDLAND?

Trivia night at the Bowling Club (hospital teams almost always win).

Dinner and drinks at the Esplanade.

Good food truck’s most nights on “dreamers corner”.

Port Hedland, Western Australia
